chili

I forgot -- I have a picture of the wilted spinach salad and veat with asparagus tips I made a couple of weeks ago. The veat was a little dry, but otherwise, the meal was quite tasty. Next time, I add the asparagus sauce earlier so some of it can soak into the veat.

Today I made chili:

  • one can diced tomatoes, drained
  • two cans kidney beans, drained
  • one can tomato sauce
  • one *large* can white hominy, drained
  • two carrots, shredded
  • two salad onions, sliced thinly
  • several tablespoons canola oil
  • one green bell pepper, diced
  • chili powder, salt, oregano, cilantro, cumin, etc. to taste

Heat oil in heavy-bottomed six- or eight-quart pot over medium-high heat. Add onions and saute for a minute or two. Add rest of ingredients. Simmer on very-low heat for an hour.

And I made a beer-herb bread, which turned out quite lovely.

spicy caramel wine sauce

Red Wine Caramel Sauce is delish, but it's even better with a dash of cayenne pepper!

I wonder if I should make some brownies to pour it over? Or a custard of some sort?

using vegetables that have seen better days

Because the vegetable-box we get delivered shows up once every two weeks -- and has lots and lots of vegetables in it -- I've been experimenting with things to do with wilted vegetables.

I had a quiche phase, and a gratin phase, and a soup phase. Today, though, I'm trying something a little unexpected -- a wilted salad. The spinach, tomato, and onion I've got are only a *little* bit past their prime, so I think I can get away with it.

- Quarter & seed two tomatoes.
- Toss tomato wedges with salt. Place in colander over bowl to drain for 1/2 hour (this is what James Peterson's _Vegetables_ cookbook says to do with imperfect tomatoes)
- dice two slices of large onion. Soak in olive oil to cover.
- mix tomato wedges and onion; toss well. Refrigerate.
- wilt spinach
- serve with balsamic reduction

I'm also serving asparagus tips with seared Veat (a chicken-like meat substitute), but the asparagus is reasonably fresh. :)

sex, tampons, and endometriosis

Women who engage in sexual activity or use tampons while menstruating seem to lower their chances of developing the painful condition known as endometriosis, says a New York Times article. (free registration required to view new york times website.) Apparently, orgasm helps push more out, and tampons help wick more out.

I'm not sure I'm going back to wearing tampons (I love my Keeper) but that's good to know anyway. :)
