The first step in writing a manifesto is to penetrate the indoctrination that injustice is inevitable.

fun photo shoot

Yay for models who have fun with the camera.

(that picture is ever-so-slighly risque; please exercise caution clicking on the link if you're some place that looking at racy photographs would be problematic. Like, at work, for instance...

photography book mini-reviews

Molly asked me about the photographic lighting and posing books I've been looking at. I'm not sure "recommend" would be the term I'd use for my posing book -- if anybody has one they love, I'd be delighted to hear about it -- but I am enthralled by the two lighting books I've been reading. [more]

catalogs

I've done a fair bit of shopping on the web for remodelling and decorating my new house. As a result, Uphill gets several new paper catalogs in the mail every day. For a time, I was content to store catalogs in the bathroom, aging out old ones as we received new ones; the goal was to keep one and only one catalog from each merchant. This was all well and good until we starting getting catalogs from enough different merchants that the bathroom pile got too big for me to carry by myself. I've decided that I'm happy to not actually receive catalogs from places I do not deem fun bathroom reading.

So, last Thursday I did a tiny experiment. The procedure: Find the phone number on each catalog, and find the web page address. Dial the phone number and pull up the web page. While I was listening to rings, on hold, and/or navigating audio menus, try to find directions on their website for removing myself from the catalog. I began this with a suspicion that mail-order catalogs haven't figured out that someone might want to use their website in order to remove themselves from a paper mailing list; I did not succeed in proving this to myself.

The results... [more]

spring has reached seattle

Spring is definitely here. I have a garden full of purple tulips gone blowsy and windows are open all over the house.

Am beginning to suspect I need a digital camera.

(the author of the Very Secret Diaries wrote a diary for Peg Kerr. That, combined with me having *finally* seen Bridget Jones' Diary means that I'm finding myself desperately wanting to write in same style.)

White sauce with English Peas

1/2 yellow onion
olive oil
1 cup fresh english peas, shelled
2/3 cup vegetable stock
2 tbs butter
2 tbs white flour
1 c milk
salt, nutmeg, and white pepper to taste

Chop onion.
Heat olive oil in 2qt saucepan.
Add onion; saute until translucent.
Add peas and stock. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes.

While peas are simmering, melt butter in small saucepan. Add flour; whisk until smooth. Simmer gently, whisking occasionally, until mixture is pale gold. Add milk and simmer, whisking until smooth.

When peas are done simmering, pour white sauce over the peas. Add salt, nutmeg, and white pepper. Simmer, uncovered, until thick.

Serve over pasta (I used wagon wheels). Makes 4-6 servings.
