globally, reporting and racism. locally, my own little roller-coaster.

Of *course* a bunch of privileged overpaid designers think these offensive t-shirts are "cheeky, irreverent, and funny" -- they've likely never had their complaints of real, live, hurtful racial discrimination met with laughter from those-in-power.

The problem with a sensitized political consciousness is that I'm churning through an awful lot of antacids.

On other fronts, my new boss is leaving the company in the summer (boo!) and Z & I are buying a house (yay!).

update, 11:30 a.m.
Molly just pointed out the "objective" sneer-quotes CNN put around the word 'racist' in their headline. On the other hand, in their article Japan blasts IMF as unprofessional, they don't put 'unprofessional' in quotes. Somebody's copy-editors have an agenda, perhaps? A quick scan of CNN business indicates that the sneer-quotes show up in headlines that, without them, might challenge the Conservative American.

I have a smart girlfriend.

braised greens

Tonight, I braised curly-leaf red lettuce alongside some powerful green chard. though were I to do it again, I'd cook the chard separately, much longer, or replace the chard altogether with another, less pungent green. The lettuce went wispy and delicate, and the sauce was gentle; the chard definitely dominated the dish. If you really like chard, that's just fine...I only mostly like chard. :)

For once, I'm going to try to replicate the recipe...

Preheat oven to 350F.
Shred a head of lettuce and one bunch (~15 leaves) chard, or two heads of lettuce.
Put 1/4 cup oil in a large skillet or wok on medium-high to high heat.
Braise greens in hot oil for ten minutes, stirring frequently.
In a roasting pan, combine:

  • 1cup water
  • two tablespoons minced garlic
  • one can kidney or garbanzo beans, drained
  • 1T each of spices of your choice (I used coriander and thyme).
Add greens and bake for 15 minutes.
While the greens are baking, deglaze the skillet/wok with 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup wine.
Add 1T maple syrup and salt to taste.
Transfer greens to a serving dish & pour the liquid left behind back into the skillet/wok, mix with deglazing liquid.
In a small bowl, mix 1/8 cup water and 2T corn starch.
    Bring deglazing liquid to boil.
Stir corn starch mixture into boiling sauce, stirring constantly. Sauce should thicken rapidly (if it doesn't....don't worry about it).
    Pour sauce over greens.
Serves three as a main dish (two if the lettuces used have a very high water content), or six as a side-dish.

The inspiration: Braised Lettuces from Lu's Recipe Extravaganza.

    dear feminism's detractors....

Dear feminism's detractors, naysayers, and "I'm not a feminist, but..." apologists:

Your stereotypes are a quarter century out of date. Do try to keep up.

    evil financial institutions -- update!

Apparently, db got audited and fined and all sorts of bad stuff happened to them as a result of their transfer-policies being frustrating and confusing – the woman I spoke to claimed that they had been trying to be “flexible for our customers’ convenience,” but really all they’d been was frustrating and incompetent.

    evil financial institutions!

I knew this already, but deutche bank -- or the part of it that I deal with, which was bt-alex-brown until db acquired it, at least -- is evil, evil, evil. I'm so glad I'm getting rid of them...but I'm perhaps more impatient to have that done than is wise. [more]

    kugel!

Hey, the kugel I made up the other day isn't half bad. I was tired of sweet passover food, and I had this bunch of red chard that was going limp, so... [more]
