The first step in writing a manifesto is to penetrate the indoctrination that injustice is inevitable.

10/17/2003 Entry: National Coalition for Sexual Freedom

I *nearly* made a donation to the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom today. Instead I ended up sending them a note:

I visited your website this morning with the intent of making a donation.

Much to my dismay, the "media update" section in one of the more prominent parts of your website is touting a very misleading article by Nancy Powell from the Ocean City Today newspaper.

Do you know that the quotations in that article purported to be "from a Black Rose member" are in fact not from members at all, but from people who just had the temerity to discuss this issue on a public newsgroup? The author of that article sifted a handful of negative comments out of an extended discussion (much of it in defense of BR!) and wrongly attributed them to members of Black Rose, when in fact the participants in this discussion were simply members of the usenet newsgroup soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm, who aren't involved in the black rose group and are largely making statements based on conjecture.

The premise of this article -- that Black Rose members accuse the group of causing its own trouble -- is fabricated. I can't give my support to a cause while it's giving extra publicity to fabricated slander about a subject important to me!

I'm sure that they'll address the problem, or that the link will melt off their front page as issues more important to black rose come to the forefront of the fight against sexual repression. And when either of those things happen, I'll donate. Because in the long run, the support of alternative sexual expression is more important than this one issue.

But in the short term, it seemed important to at least make a statement, y'know?
