11/17/2001 Entry: work hard, play hard
Interesting things to think about came out of an intense four or five days at work, the first of which is that working that hard really does mean I should then play that hard (and not just *slack* hard, which is what I usually do after an exceptionally hard week at work). So, the first interesting thing was the realization of the various different ways I can get joy from my work. I started the week off strongly disagreeing with a business decision that I was being scrambled to support. I still disagree with the decision, but part of me, at least, is incredibly proud of the work I did to support it anyway. It's not my job to sit and sulk -- and if I had, we'd all probably still *be* there trying to get this damn thing working, instead of having launched it on Thursday (on time!). The part of me that's not proud is the part that's keeping me on my feet even when I'm over-tired, buoying me up on a wave of righteous fury that I let my job do this to me *again*. Twice a year is at *least* one time too many. Rob says I should indulge in a wave of righteous apathy, next. I have three video games sitting here in boxes next to my desk, with which I can do just that. :) They are: Settlers (fourth edition), Monopoly Tycoon, and Civ III. Yes, I've had my copy of Civ III for nearly a week and *I haven't opened it*. I know that I'll lose days when I do, so I'm waiting until it's safe.... In the meantime, though, I *have* been playing hard: - I stayed up 'till 2 a.m. Thursday night, upgrading byz's kernel. We had *some* kind of ugly resource-allocation problem that brought the box down two days running; it hasn't happened since the upgrade, so I guess it's good I put in that time, even though it did mean that I was tired all day Friday at work. - 11:30pm on a *Friday*, I went to see the Harry Potter movie. I was prepared to be disappointed; way back when I saw the pictures of the kid they casted for Harry, I'd decided that he looked too ordinary (and not scruffy enough!)...but on-screen, he thoroughly captured my heart with that intense stare of his. There was *lots* of good non-verbal communication in this film. Harry, Draco, and Snape all had some spectacular moments where all that was happening was their eyes were moving, ever so slightly. Yay! (And...on a *friday*. I never stay out late on Fridays! I did miss the pre-Harry-dinner my friends were putting on so I could have a nap, first) - tonight, we're driving out to where it'll be cold and clear, to watch the leonids. If I'm going to be up past midnight for the third night in a row, these had better be good. :) And this morning, I made this weblog entry. And I removed the "last updated" section from the top-page of my website; so much auto-updates (like, for instance, the 'latest journal entry') that the date is always *wrong*. My website is different every day -- new quote, new featured-picture, sometimes a new journal entry. So there. :) Posted by sev @ 02:36 PM PST |
