11/07/2001 Entry:
thinking about weblogs, again.
I'm jealous of Alex's weblog. He's much better than I am about writing in it frequently. I have this sense that interesting things rarely happen in my life, but that's because I'm confused about my audience -- for me, "interesting" means "out of the ordinary," but I get the impression that people read weblogs for ordinary, day-to-day stuff...just not their *own* ordinary, day-to-day stuff.
So, I'm trying to do better. Ramble on a bit. Try to look at my life through somebody else's eyes. It's not easy.
Why would anyone want to know about my cough drops? They're ice-blue halls mentholyptus. They make my nose and mouth and throat all minty-cool, but more importantly, they keep my throat from itching (much).
I've gotten at least two of my friends sick. A couple of my coworkers are out sick, as well, but I'm not sure it's' my fault, since I haven't been at work since Thursday.
Hm. I noticed that one reason the weblog is boring until I do something out of the ordinary for me is that most of what I do involves other people, and I try to be really careful about other people's privacy. I speculated about other reasons I might not want a weblog, back in January, in Writing in the Rain, which I think of as more of an essay-testbed than a journal.

Cheryl, I love this new weblog. And yes, some of us do like to read about your cough drops. Perhaps we catch cold too and need a cough drop recommendation? :) Besides, you learn a lot about a person by understanding how they relate to the world around them.
The only motivator I have to update my weblog is my family nagging at me. It makes them feel a part of my day to day life even though I am over a thousand miles away. Ironically a weblog has the same effect even for people that are sitting right next to you.
I suffer similar problems with posting, including but not limited to: OPP (Other People's Privacy), the fact that my audience varies from friends and family to teenage girls that somehow stumble accross my site and then there are the oversexed, lonely guys looking for love in all the wrong places.
I guess the key for me is that each entry has a different audience. Some people get my postings, some people don't. Sometimes only I get the posting, and that's the best because my weblog is principaly for and about *me*.
And with that, I will probably copy this posting to my own weblog.
