The first step in writing a manifesto is to penetrate the indoctrination that injustice is inevitable.

07/09/2001 Entry: Weekend in the Sun

I spent a lovely weekend in the sunshine. Ethan and I took the Miata (okay, Ethan drove and I navigated) with the top down to the Phoenix Festival, which was held this weekend about halfway between Portland and Yakima. The new GPS functioned reasonably well, I shot a couple of rolls of film, saw parts of Washington I've never seen before, and stayed up too late dancing with my friends.

So, the GPS. It's a Garmin eTrex, though I don't recall off the top of my head which model it is. Hooking it up to a laptop equipped with Microsoft Streets was very neat -- no more frantic scanning of the computer or paper map trying to figure out where we were! It was able to pinpoint our location quite well (except for the two times where it brefily lost satellite signal altogether), sometimes to within 15 feet.

I haven't yet decided if I'm going to scan the pictures from the Phoenix Festival -- I'll be picking them up from the photofinisher's tomorrow, but I'm not having them do scans. Since I decided that I didn't want to deal with the Extremely Rude people at cameras west anymore, I'm kind of left without an affordable scanning solution -- Film Stop does great work, but their scans are *very* pricey (and higher resolution than I need). I'm seeking a CCD desktop negative scanner I can feed uncut 36-exposure rolls into -- the Kodak RFS 3600 does, but all the reviews I've see have said that the quality of the scans isn't great. Rumor has it that one of the Nikon CoolScan scanners will take 36 at one shot, instead of just six (like the specs say), but I haven't seen any proof.
