Maddie smiling. The proof.

Maddie has started smiling. "The doctors say she is very advanced for her age". Shannon is very good at pulling the faces and using "the voice" to make it happen. What a cutey.

Whale in the Thames

I know that the Thames River, which we live next to, is much cleaner then it was 20 or 30 years ago, but a whale? Cool!

Whale spotted in central London
"A whale has made its way up the River Thames to central London, where it is being watched by riverside crowds. The northern bottle-nosed whale, which is about 20ft (6m) long, was seen swimming past the Houses of Parliament and is still moving upstream." BBC NEWS

iPod in a Moleskine

My two (current) favorite things to have with me are my 60Gb Video iPod (amazing machine) and my Moleskine notebook. Or rather my Moleskines, since I keep one (with graph paper) for work and one (with sketching paper) for personal/diary use.

I thought I'd have a go at combining these two (design classics) by buying a mini-Moleskine, carving out its innards, and fitting the iPod into it. The leather covers and the elastic strap for sealing it provide some decent protection, especially when the iPod itself is wrapped in a soft cloth.

This is definitely V1, but I though it was fun. I really need a slightly thicker Moleskine to seal the iPod in, and the pages flop about a bit too much. And the soft cloth is a bit of a pain. Still, those are things I can work on in a future version.

Sadly, the Smart has to go

It's with great regret that we're selling our Smart Car. Details here.

Smart (or really Mercedes) insist that you have to buy their special car seat to have a baby in the front. It has some sort of over-engineered "transponder" which automatically turns the airbags off on the passenger side. In the real world, all these baby seats come as a system that fit different buggies. And since we can't find any details on the Smart seat (which buggies it fits) and since we've already bought our seat, the whole car has to go.

Really sad.

Favorite photos of 2005

It's been a bit of an odd year for photography. Although I feel like I've taken far fewer shots then normal, it doesn't really seem to be the case. I've hit just over 7,000 for this year, which is up from last year. I've just felt a lot less focused on photography as an activity. My shots have been far more casual.

Picking my Favorites of 2005 has been a little tough. Although I feel like I've taken less shots in the last 12 months then the previous 12, I've picked more shots this year (60) then I did for last years set (44). Maybe that's just bad editing?
